I came to this decision during my journey in my early 20s. I was going through a lot of seeking, confusion, and low self-esteem and I grew up in a joint family where the health of my grandparents, especially my paternal grandparents, was not the best. My grandfather was a diabetic and a heart patient, and my grandmother had a plethora of illnesses. My grandfather's leg had to be amputated due to negligence, and my grandmother had to take multiple colour tablets of varied shapes and sizes every day. It was difficult to witness their health struggles and it made me realize the importance of taking care of my health.
My father also had health issues, suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. Seeing my family members struggle with their health made me determined to avoid facing the same problems myself. I was often depressed and lacked guidance, but then I discovered yoga. I attended a 5-day workshop in my local community out of curiosity, and it was a transformative experience for me.
After the program, I was eager to learn more about yoga and found a local studio to continue my practice. Attending regular classes strengthened both my body and my confidence. I faced back pain and other health challenges, but yoga helped me address these issues. I continued to practice yoga for over a year under the guidance of a wonderful teacher until she moved away. During my early 20s, amidst a period of seeking, confusion, and low self-esteem, I found myself deeply impacted by the health struggles of my family members. Growing up in a joint family, the health issues of my grandparents, particularly my diabetic and heart patient grandfather, and my grandmother with multiple illnesses, left a lasting impression on me. Witnessing my grandfather undergo an amputation due to negligence and my grandmother managing a myriad of medications daily was a stark reminder of the fragility of health.
The health challenges extended to my father, who battled diabetes and high blood pressure. These experiences served as a wake-up call for me to prioritize my own well-being and avoid a similar fate. Despite feeling lost and despondent, a serendipitous encounter with yoga proved to be a turning point in my life. Attending a workshop out of sheer curiosity opened up a new world of holistic health and self-care for me.
Subsequently, delving deeper into yoga at a local studio became a transformative journey. Regular practice not only strengthened my physical body but also nurtured my mental resilience. Confronted with back pain and other health issues, yoga emerged as a powerful tool in addressing and overcoming these challenges. Under the guidance of a dedicated teacher, I honed my practice for over a year until circumstances led me to continue my yoga journey independently.
Reflecting on this path a decade later, I am filled with gratitude for the positive impact yoga has had on my health. Embracing a preventative mindset and trusting my intuition to address any health concerns have become integral to my well-being. My journey is now centered on holistic empowerment, treating my body with reverence, and fostering a deep sense of gratitude. Prioritizing my health and embracing yoga have undoubtedly been the most rewarding decisions I have made, leading me to a place of improved health and inner harmony.
